In his first words after being elected today, Pope Leo XIV, American Robert Brevost, said: "Peace be with you." On Thursday, Pope Leo XIV addressed "the words of peace to all peoples" in his first appearance from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican.

He also called as the first American pope in history to "build bridges" through "dialogue," urging "to go forward without fear, united, hand in hand, and together."
