Pope calls to "take a position" against injustices and inequalities

Pope Leo XIV called on believers to "take a position" against injustice and inequality, citing American journalist Dorothy Day as an example. In his speech at St. Peter's Square, the pontiff stressed the importance of acting rather than remaining silent, describing peacemakers as those who "bear the consequences but continue to move forward".

Pope Leo XIV urged on Saturday to "take a position" against "injustices and inequalities", where "human dignity is trampled" and "the fragile are silenced", during a jubilee audience in St. Peter's Square.

"In the face of injustice, inequality, where human dignity is trampled, where the fragile are silenced: take a position," stated Leo XIV, adding that it is necessary "to show with deeds that things cannot continue as before".

During his speech, the American pontiff, also with Peruvian nationality, recalled the figure of American journalist Dorothy Day, whom he defined as an example of a "peacemaker".

Day, the pope explained, understood that "the development model of her country did not generate the same opportunities"; that "the dream for many was a nightmare"; and that, as a Christian, "she had to get involved with the workers, with the migrants, with those discarded by an economy that kills".

"She wrote as a journalist, that is, she thought and made others think. Writing is important. And today it is more important than ever," he added.

And he concluded: "Such are peacemakers: they take a position, they bear the consequences, but they move forward".

Before the audience for the Jubilee of Choirs and Coral Groups, which this weekend will bring together more than 35,000 pilgrims from 117 countries in Rome, Leo XIV toured the packed square in the popemobile to greet the faithful.
