Pope Leo XIV stated on Wednesday that «European identity can only be understood and promoted in reference to its Judeo-Christian roots», in his speech upon receiving a delegation from the European Parliament's Conservatives and Reformists group.
«This is, above all, a recognition of facts», explained the American pontiff. He emphasized «the contribution that members of Christian communities have made and continue to make for the good of European society». To this end, the Pope cited «some of the important advances of Western civilization, especially the cultural treasures of its imposing cathedrals, its sublime art and music, and scientific advances, not to mention the growth and expansion of universities».
He highlighted «the rich ethical principles and patterns of thought that constitute the intellectual heritage of Christian Europe» which he assured «are fundamental to responding to the challenges posed by poverty, social exclusion, economic deprivation, as well as the current climate crisis, violence, and war».
Therefore, Leo XIV urged European parliamentarians to ensure «that the voice of the Church, particularly through its social doctrine, continues to be heard. It is not a matter of restoring a past era, but of ensuring that key resources for future cooperation and integration are not lost».
«I pray that you will play your part and participate positively in this important dialogue, not only for the good of the citizens of Europe, but of all humanity», he concluded.
